Who needs a convertible in Cleveland? Nobody. That’s why this SAAB 900 Turbo convertible needs to be brought back to its natural habitat, somewhere in the North East or Southern California. This, the ultimate yuppie car of G.W. Bush I’s presidency was made famous by – oh wait, it was never actually made famous in any movies and BMW was actually the yuppie car of the 90’s.
So why do we love SAAB’s? First you need to define who ‘we’ are. ‘We’ are people who admire to people who do what they think is right even if it’s goes against the norm. ‘We’ are people who enjoy trying to understand one-of-a-kind engineering. ‘We’ are people who thinks it makes perfect sense for a nordic country that has snow on the ground 6 months of the year to produce convertibles instead of a snowmobiles.
New England is in the middle of it’s summer swelter and a drive to the ocean looks better every weekend. But there’s no point in living in a artificially cooled, hermetic, sedan when one could have the top down, catch some sun and be all that in a classic.
This 1991 SAAB 900 Turbo Convertible looks to be in great shape. Does it really matter that it’s a 3-speed slush-box? It’s not like there’s any real performance to be had from the manual gearbox. Having a turbo just helps the car keep up with traffic.
Although this example is far from perfect. The lister claiming the top does not raise or lower automatically, the A/C has been disconnected, the radio doesn’t work well and the ABS light is on. However, I think all this could be put into shape over a weekend. Considering how nice the interior is, and if there is little to no rust, I think it would be worth the effort.
