I am on a big coupe binge (check out this 6-Series BMW) because the idea of passing the hours on my weekly cruise between where I live on the weekends (Boston) and where I work during the week (NY) in a big, quiet, smooth and powerful luxe-barge is intoxicating.
I started my virtual shopping with ‘reasonable’ options like an Audi A5, BMW 3-Series or Mercedes C-class coupe. But once Google served up these S-Class based (C216) super coupes I don’t want to drive anything else.
Under the skin these are basically supercars. The Pagani Huayra used a twin-turbo V12 version of the motor (M158) as found in the AMG CL65 version of the couple. This example, without the 4 extra cylinders and complexity of the turbos, has a 5.5L V8 delivering more than ample power with 383hp, and more importantly, 391 ft/lb of torque.
The contemporary comparisons were with the Maserati Grand-Turismo, Aston-Martin DB9 and Bentley Continental GT. One must also love depreciation. At $15,500, this example is nearing 1/10th the original sticker price. These M237 powered CLs even have a reputation for begin more reliable than most (for what that’s worth).
